Lithe takes a half-step into the club realm with Yaya / Gunman, shedding the faux-rock instrumentation of 2017’s Fervent Gum and leaning further into rhythmic maximalism.
As on Fervent Gum, Lithe works within self-imposed rules on melody and rhythm, but with a vastly different sound palette, drawing from across the club pantheon. The result is hard drum spun out into darker, more atmospheric territory, reframing rhythms from UK funky, gqom and grime. There is a narrative path that carries over from earlier works here too, each track bleeding over into and informing the latter.
Yaya / Gunman is the first of three EPs from Lithe to be released throughout 2020. Each track transitions into the next, and listening to all three installments consecutively will reveal a fully realised mini-album.
